Introduction
Probably the most important thing to understand before continuing with other modules is that this is not a rapid weight loss system. Equally important is that i know you know what foods you should be eating and not eating. This is called the" Apple or Do-nut" conundrum. Meaning, you know that the apple is good for you, but its far easier to pick the do-nut. Hopefully, after careful review of the information found here, you will find it easier and much more gratifying to eat the apple than the do-nut. So I'm not here to tell you what you already know. Rather, I'm here to help you understand why you may not be losing weight even when you do eat the foods you know you should be eating.
It is no secret that we are not winning the war against disease and dysfunction in this country. Easily, obesity and nutrition contribute to more sickness and disease than any other problem in our country. From heart disease and cancer, to diabetes and arthritis, the food we eat either enhances health or enhances disease processes.
Despite the fact that Americans spends approximately 1.5 trillion on health care, we are one of the sickest countries in the world. According to peer reviewed medical journals, 75% of chronic disease in the US is preventable. In addition, according to the Journal of Applied Physiology, 50-91% of chronic diseases in the US are attributed to diet alone. We rank last among industrialized nations in all around health; we have more degenerative diseases than any other country in the world; 1 out of every 2 people will die of heart attack and strokes; 1 out of 3 people will die from cancer; 1 out of 8 women will get breast cancer, we have one of the worst infant mortality rates. What many in this country fail to realize is that these frightening and alarming statistics are unique to the U.S. In fact, we have diseases in this country that others don't even have names fro including osteoporosis (which doesn't even exist in Okinawa) autoimmune diseases, heart disease and cancer. Without traveling to other nations or studying their respective health statistics, many people simply believe that it's normal to succumb to these afflictions. While these diseases may be common, suffering from them is far from normal.
In fact, people in other parts of the world including Okinawa, Royal China, and Indonesia not only live longer than Americans, but they also live free from disease and dysfunction. Something almost no elderly American can say for themselves.
In this country, it is unfortunately assumed that we will all inevitable come into some disease that will be the end of us. In fact, its so common today that if you were to ask a child in this country what happens to us when we get old, they automatically assume that we will get sick. How sad is this? It's interesting when you study other cultures across the globe regarding old age and human function. Newsweek magazine did a cover story on a Okinawan centenarian once who was 102 years old. The fact that he was 102 years old was really not all that surprising, but the idea of him working every single day, plowing fields and pulling weeds outside the blistering sun was truly eye opening. More interesting than this single man, was the idea that he was the norm in his culture and it was not uncommon for other people over the age of 100 years still working outside just like everyone else.
Some people will argue that it must be something in their genetic line that helps them live long healthy lives. But think again geneticists!!! When older Okinawan's immigrate to other countries, they begin to suffer from disease at the same rate as others. In fact, if an Okinawan were to relocate to the US, they would have a 1 in 2 chance of developing heart disease.
While most of us realize that we have a genetic weakness for some disease, few understand that we actually contribute to the disease as it manifests itself in our bodies. Take the Pima Indians of Southern Russia, for example.
Before WWII, this tribe has zero incidence of Type II diabetes. After being introduced to a western diet that included processed food, today over 50% of the Pima Indians suffer from Type II diabetes. Obviously, they have a genetic weakness for this disease. However, when they ate a diet that was natural and well- suited to them, they did not develop the disease, despite their genetic predisposition to diabetes.
Unfortunately, my father typified people who believe that they are unable to control their health destiny. My father insisted on eating and drinking things that he liked despite knowing that they were bad for his health. "I have to die of something so I might as well enjoy myself," he would say.
The problem with this mythical-irresponsible and straight up offensive thinking is that we don't simply succumb to a disease and die at age 70 or 80. Unfortunately for many, there are years of suffering between the onset of disease and death. Not only does disease cause suffering, but it robs many of the ability to enjoy the things they love and the ability to live an optimal lifestyle. It is very difficult to fulfill our life's purpose while enduring pain and suffering. I can attest to this from my personal experiences.
Years later, my father realized that I was right about his poor diet and the detrimental toll it took on our family. Several years ago my mother started experiencing chronic knee pain and back pains. My grandparents all suffered and have died from heart disease, stroke or cancer. I have aunts and uncles with Diabetes and cousins who are all choked up on Ritalin and anti-depressant medications. Watching my parents and my family suffer from such preventable diseases is what has led me on a mission to spread the gospel of the importance of a good diet in preserving health.
Our bodies do not need help healing- they just don't need anything interfering with its ability to heal on its own.
Your body was designed to be fit and healthy. It doesn't need something to be put into it, rather we need to clean it from all the junk and unhealthiness that exists today. New millennium health care is this: we need to let the body do its work to heal, not simply mask symptoms with more often than not harmful, costly and ineffective medications.
I do not believe that one diet is for everyone. After working with 1000's of clients and exhaustive research, it is apparent that there are three basic changes that everyone on the planet needs to make. I refer to this as The Basic Diet. For those who are interested in taking their health and performance to a higher level there is an Intermediate Diet. Still some individuals require a more advanced diet to restore health and healing. I call this the Healing Diet. There are 5 factors to determine if this diet is right for you. Many individuals who need this diet are already in a state of disease. However, this diet is used by others on a short term basis for detoxification and weight loss and on a permanent basis for those who are genetically suited for this diet.
Real Food Vs Fake Food
Before we can learn how to transform our food, we have to learn the difference between the real stuff and the imposters
Imposters!
Real food is just what it sounds like: food in its most basic form taken directly from nature without additive, alterations, or filters. So, what about fake food? When most people think of "fake food", they picture some sort of junk food or candy or bag of chips. Unfortunately, fake food is actually food that we consume every day that's disguised as "healthy" consumable food. Take apple juice as an example. Apple juice started out with good intentions to nourish your body. Allow me to discuss this in detail:
First we begin with the apple, which is perfect because it has almost everything your body needs. It's full of fiber, water, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and antioxidants
BUT THAT'S WHEN THE PROCESS OF TURNING A REAL FOOD INTO A FAKE FOOD BEGINS!
We take this real food and remove its peel, which contains the majority of the antioxidants and fiber. Then we mash the poor, innocent fruit down and press it so that only the juice remains. We then take this juice and pasteurize it, which heats the juice at 150 degrees for 40 minutes, killing off all the nutrients and denaturing all vitamins. Next, we remove the water to make a concentrate. Then we decided to turn it back into juice again, and pour in the preservatives, tap water, coloring, and added sugar.
So we started with a delicious and nutritious apple and ended up with glorified sugar water. This my friends, is how a real food becomes a fake food.
In Summary: Take an Apple - minus fiber - minus thousands of nutrients + plus additives = equals FAKE FOOD.
Understanding Nutrient Density
Start Counting Nutrients and STOP Counting Calories
Nutrient Density is a concept pioneered by Joel Fuhrman M.D. His signature book Eat To Live: The Revolutionary Plan for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, is a great read and recommended for anyone serious about achieving optimal health.
Now that we know how a real food becomes a fake food, let's discuss in a little more detail the "why" behind it all. It's a simple concept called Nutrient Density, and it's the reason why real food is ALWAYS better than fake food (for your body).
Nutrient Density (ND) is a way to classify the amount of nutrients in food, both real and fake. It's a scale that ranges from 0 to 1000, with 1000 being the most nutritious "super foods", and every other food falling somewhere between.
What's surprising is that the highest ranking foods as far as nutrients are found not in whole grains, but in vegetables and fruits. For example, with an ND rating of 53 for OATMEAL (a food traditionally considered healthy) and an ND rating of 1000 for KALEB, it would literally require you to eat 20 bowls of oatmeal to match the nutrients found in 1 bowl of kale!!!
The Nutrient Density chart I have provided will show you where many of the most common foods fall in terms of nutrients. And it's obvious who wins the battle between real and fake food. Real food is ALWAYS better because it's packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and a host of other nutrients that are vital for the body but still being discovered scientifically each and every day.
As the saying goes, AMERICANS ARE OVERFED BUT UNDERNOURISHED! If your cells don't have nutrients, you are going to be sick. We obsess over counting calories, fats, carbs, weight watcher points, etc%u2026..but never count nutrients. This makes no sense.
BEST Real Foods
1. Vegetables
These foods are the most nutrient dense of all food groups. They contain mostly fiber, little to no sugar and have an alkalizing effect on the body. Veggies are the most powerful anti-cancer agents known to man aside from vitamin D.
My favorite veggies: leafy greens, red cabbage, carrots, red bell peppers, cauliflower
2. Fruits
Especially those of the berry variety are full of health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and alleviating digestive problems.
My favorite fruits: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, lemons
3. Beans
Reduce heart disease and risk of stroke, help prevent cancer and even save you money.
My favorite beans: kidney, black, garbanzo (chick pea), lentils, adzuki
4. Nuts + Seeds
Nuts are tiny powerhouses. They contain a host of nutrients that fight heart disease and diabetes, boost brain function and the immune system.
My favorite nuts & seeds: almonds, pecans, cashews, pumpkin seeds, flax seed
Note: stay away from peanuts (these are not nuts and have aflatoxins)
5. Organic Meats + Eggs
Meat is the human body's ideal source of quality protein (genetically speaking). Meat has essential amino acids necessary optimal function. In addition, many minerals present in meat are more absorbable by the body than vegetables or grains.
My favorite meats: wild salmon, free range chicken, organic eggs, grass fed beef, venison, organic/free range turkey
6. Herbs & Spices
Herbs and spices have been used for centuries for endless reasons. Their uses range from common ailments to overall health, weight loss and more. Herbs and spices can offer medicinal properties and are great balancers that help regulate body function.
My favorite herbs and spices: garlic, cinnamon, turmeric, basil, ginger, cayenne, rosemary, cilantro, crushed black pepper, crushed red peppers
7. Gluten-free grains
These foods do not show up in my top 5 for a reason.
My favorite grains: sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown & wild rice, sprouted gluten-free grains (spelt, millet)
