1. Encourage healthy activities: Trying to get my kids to quit playing video games or surfing online would be impossible. I admit, I will not even try that approach. Instead of trying to eliminate sedentary activities, I have taken a more positive and hopefully receptive approach. Children love to be active. Get involved with your children in physical activity. Offer variations of physical activity. By providing alternatives that are fun, you can increase your chances that your child will be more receptive to change. In addition, you will help them to feel in control of their life and that they are actually the one making the decision. This takes some practice but once you have learned the skill, it is priceless.

2. Daily nutrition and diet: Again, trying to eliminate what you consider to be poor food choices, is going to be impossible. Instead of forcing a diet upon your child, cutting out ALL sweets and other unhealthy foods, try offering them healthy foods they can enjoy. Fresh fruit instead of cookies. 1% or skim milk instead of whole milk. You get the idea. To increase your chances that your child will improve their eating habits, provide CHOICES rather than trying to force them to eat healthy. This will ultimately create a healthy lifestyle and your child will not feel so restricted. As we all know, restrictions often lead to overindulgence so be careful how you encourage diet and nutrition if your goal is to "help a child lose weight".

The most important thing to remember is to validate your childs feelings, communicate effectively with your child and compromise.

Children generally have no idea of the impact it has on their life, general health etc. That is why it is important to focus on the goal of a healthier lifestyle instead of weight loss. Offer positive solutions and embrace their successes, no matter how small.
