Dr. Oz's Ayurvedic Secrets to Lose Weight

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the the traditional medical practice of India and was created over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda focuses on maintaining balance in the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise, and body detoxing. It also focuses on the overall health of mind, body and spirit.

In Ayurveda, there are five elements: air, water, fire, earth, and space. These elements form the three doshas. The three dosha types are: vata, kapha, and pitta. These types also cdetermine your natural metabolic rate.

People with vata doshas are said to be quick minded, usually thin framed, and fast on their feet. They can be more prone to high anxiety levels, dry skin, wiry hair and and indegestion.

People with kapha are supposedly very calm and steady, usually have a larger/curvy body frame and have a very good memory. The downside is they are more susceptible to diabetes, obesity, sinus congestion, and gallbladder problems.

People with pitta as their primary dosha are thought to very excitable and outgoing people. They prefer cooler climates. They are more likely to get heart disease, stomach ulcers and arthritis.

A person with a dosha that is imbalanced will find that their health and wellness will decrease.

Ayurvedic Recipe for Detox: Three Dosha Soup

Dr. Oz says you don't have to diet to lose weight. In fact, you can eat your way to a slimmer you using Ayurvedic cooking techniques. Here's a recipe using flavorful Indian spices to melt away the fat that is good for all three doshas.

Three Dosha Soup
Yields: About 8 Cups
Ready in: 45min

Benefits:
---Detoxes digestive tract
---Grounding, calming and warming
---Restores balance

cup basmati rice
cup yellow dal
8 cups water
1 tablespoon ghee or clarified butter
teaspoon ground cumin
1 inch fresh ginger root, peeled and minced
1 teaspoon cinnamon
teaspoon celtic sea salt
teaspoon ground cumin
teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon cardamom powder
1 bay leaf
teaspoon celtic sea salt
bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

Heat ghee in a suacepan Wash and rinse rice and dal. Add rice and dal to ghee and stir. Then add water, ginger,spices and bay leaf . Bring up to a boil. Lower to a simmer and cover.Cook over medium-low heat for 30 - 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt, extra cumin and turmeric. Garnish with cilantro and serve.
