Thin people in most cases have faster metabolisms for a variety of reasons. Some are genetic but quite a few are within your control and easy to create for yourself. Let's talk about the major ones:

Muscle Burns More Calories. And how do you get that muscle mass? Yes, you can do a lot of weight training. Even light dumbbells twice a week will make a big difference in your strength and bone mass.

But what you eat can make a big difference in muscle mass even if you spend all day at a desk. Protein and fat build muscle; refined carbs and sugars break it down. A "low-fat" diet is likely to make you look heavier even if you actually get lighter.

Plus some forms of protein consume almost as many calories to digest than they provide in food energy. The most notable of these are hard-boiled eggs which also provide the most biologically complete protein of any food and help you lose weight without trying. Fish, chicken and lean meats are close in metabolic effect, explaining the success of diets like the Atkins and South Beach programs.

Low carb green vegetables are next on the metabolic chain. But be very careful with high carb foods, especially refined grains and sugar.

So try tricking your metabolism by drinking cold beverages. A glass of water with ice and lemon is perfect. Iced tea will help you lose weight without trying, hot coffee or tea is the opposite.

In fact, the Chinese know that hot beverages put on weight! In a country with a long history of food shortages, cold beverages are considered unhealthy because you burn more scarce calories than if you drink hot beverages. They drink hot tea but you can drink iced tea and lose weight without trying!

Increasing evidence suggested that green tea aids in weight control. Of course you can have it iced and get an extra metabolic boost!

But beware "diet" sodas. The neurotoxins in the artificial sweeteners, aspartame and Splenda in particular, confuse your brain, create a craving for carbohydrate and paradoxically lead to weight gain.

Should I Try Atkins?

The Atkins diet plan was introduced by the late Robert Atkins fifty years ago in his book, "Dr Atkins Diet Revolution." His plan overturned conventional weight management theories about calorie restriction and the unproven guideline to reduce all fats, especially of animal origin.

Atkins advised that anyone following AMA advice was on the road to metabolic damage, type 2 diabetes, heart troubles and general lack of energy and steady weight fat. Since then, many studies have shown that carbohydrate restriction is indeed a safe and effective way to lose body fat without hunger and weakness.

How Do I Try Atkins?

Atkins is an easy diet to try. It's simple to follow, whether at home, dining out, traveling or eating at the homes of most friends. There's a short list of what to eat in unlimited amounts and a longer one of foods to avoid in the first two weeks or "induction phase."

To try Atkins, eat:

  • Meat, poultry, fish, pork, eggs

  • Hard cheese, up to four ounces per day

  • Salad vegetables like dark greens, peppers and cucumbers, two to three cups

  • Real butter, real mayonnaise, olive oil and other healthy oils

  • Plenty of water and herbal and decaffeinated tea

  • Herbs, spices, lemon juice


  • That's your food for the first two weeks, plus a bonus of half an avocado or 10-20 small olives daily. Delicious! Cook everything in butter and dress your salads with olive oil and vinegars that don't include sweeteners.

    To pump your metabolism as much as possible, avoid "diet" sodas which are full of artificial sweeteners that slow weight loss and other unpleasant chemicals. Don't take any medicines unless prescribed by a doctor.

    Should I Try Atkins Even If It Doesn't Seem To Work At First?

    After the first two weeks, you will have lost 4 to 8 pounds and experienced very little hunger. Typically, you should be experiencing more energy and adding new activities. Are you satisfied with how you feel? Do you want to lose a few more pounds?

    If you feel good on Atkins, you can stay with the plan and add more carbohydrates every week until you start to gain back weight. Try more vegetables the first week after induction, then some melon and as weeks go on, add a small amount of sweet potato or rice.

    Your body knows how much carbohydrate you need to maintain your ideal weight. Have fun adding back delicious foods until you find out just how much that is.

    Atkins bars are tasty and make handy snacks in a fast food world. Just remember will be eating real, delicious healthy food, not fake "die it" food.


    You can find various versions of the book in any library or just buy a current book most anywhere. Don't forget - garage sales usually have lots of diet books from which to choose!

    Researchers now know that Vitamin D - actually a hormone - is critical to our well-being. Like the sun itself, it elevates mood, mitigates depression andboosts your immune system to battle all kinds of auto-immune diseases including cancer.

    A just released controlled study shows that overweight women who took 1000 units of vitamin D daily lost five pounds more over 12 weeks than a control group given a placebo. The faster weight losers also showed improved cholesterol ratios along with other measures of cardiovascular health.

    "Body fat mass was significantly decreased in the vitamin D group more than the placebo group," wrote their authors in their study abstract, which was published in full in the British Journal of Nutrition. "The findings showed that supplementation with vitamin D2 can significantly improve HDL-cholesterol, apoA-I concentrations (protein component of HDL-cholesterol) and LDL-cholesterol."

    Diet soda makes you fat! Have you ever noticed that all fat people drink diet soda? Well, may not all, but certainly most overweight people do. Coincidence? Or cause and effect?

    New studies show that those who drink the misnamed "diet" sodas are visibly larger than those who do not. Their waists are thicker and they also suffer the metabolic consequence of higher blood sugar and rates of type 2 diabetes. Diet soda makes you fat? How can that be? They have zero calories, right?     It all starts in your brain. Diet sodas are usually made with the artificial sweetener aspartame, known by the brand name NutraSweet. It is a powerful neurotoxin. While it works on your neurons to make your tongue think you are tasting something sweet, it also "excites" your brain cells to crave carbohydrate.

    Unlike plant-based sweeteners like cane sugar, honey or corn syrup, asparatame does not satisfy appetite or make you feel "full." The University of Texas School of Medicine followed 471 people for a decade, carefully measuring their height, weight, waist size and diet soda intake. They discovered that the diet soda drinkers, on average, expanded 70% more around the middle than the control group who drank no soda. And those who drank two or more diet sodas a day became 500% chunkier!

    This is especially disturbing to health professionals because abdominal fat is highly correlated with many health conditions, particularly heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

    What does this mean for your figure in actual numbers? Let's say your waist is now 30 inches. In ten years you might be 31 inches, still slim. But remember the diet soda drinkers added 70% more around the middle which is 1.7 inches or almost a new waist of 32. And the heavy diet soda drinkers added 500% more - that's five inches! From 30 inches to 35 inches is a high price to pay for mainlining Diet Coke!

I've found the best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good habit. Adding something new and enjoyable crowds out the bad and you won't even miss those potato chip binges.

    The Benefits Do You Get from the Bad Habit May Be Long Gone

    Be honest about how the bad habit started and why. The calories in a daily Snickers bar equal 25 pounds over a year. Did you ever think that tasty little bar could make you up three sizes bigger? And you can lose it all without power yoga or expensive packaged "diet" shakes and meals that leave you hungry and longing for a candy run.

    Why A Bad Habit Is So Hard to Break

    Willpower doesn't work. Your brain has faultless programming to keep you doing what you've always done. How often do you arrive at work without any memory of the drive? Or even drive to work instead of somewhere new that you intended to go?

    That's your unconscious programming at work. Your brain says, "always have a Snickers bar in the afternoon." You have to trick your brain into doing something else.

    What can you do instead of eating Rocky Road? Listen to music, meditate, some yoga stretches? Choose something you like as much as ice cream. Then program your new good habit with affirmations.

    Affirmations will replace negative beliefs like "I can't stop eating ice cream before bed." Just relax, visualize yourself as 15 pounds lighter and flexible from your yoga stretches.

    Sleep. It's counter-intuitive but your body needs sleep and if it doesn't get enough there is a high stress reaction that adds pounds. Going to bed an hour earlier can take off ten pounds over a year.

    Why? Lack of sleep increases the release of stress hormones. Our bodies are designed to conserve energy and calories when under stress. It's the primal fight-or-flight reaction. So anything that stresses you body, makes it hold on to calories, fat and burn even less.

    Thin people typically burn more calories per pound per hour than heavier people. They often are more active doing "nothing." They don't sit still, jump up to check on things and are always tidying up, running upstairs to get something, using hand gestures and generally expending lots of energy.

    You, too, can learn to do this. Try being more "inefficient" in the kitchen or supermarket. Instead of pushing your cart around slowly and collecting all the healthy protein and veggies, leave it in one place and run back and forth from aisle to aisle.

    And your house will be so clean and free of clutter with all the tidying up you do. Lose weight without trying and enjoy living without clutter, too!
